"Crash Feature" was a specific mode in earlier Burnout games in which players were given different settings in attempt to produce the greatest crash. "Crash Mode," now known as "Showtime," can be used at any time and in any location in Burnout Paradise. Showtime differs from earlier versions of Crash Mode in that instead of driving into a busy junction and witnessing a crash unfold, the vehicle is bouncing as long as possible around for to get points. During a race, players can now choose any path to the finish line.  Races are begun by stopping at any traffic signal and simultaneously using the accelerator and break.

The damage mechanism in Paradise has also been overhauled. Based on the condition of the automobile after the impact, there are currently two categories of collisions. The player do can drive out of the accident and continue playing if his or her automobile retains all four wheels and does not damage its chassis; this is known as a "driveaway."  If a player's car loses any wheels, has too much damage from an accident, crashes on its side or roof, or land from the outside of the game's map, the automobile is considered "wrecked," and the player must wait for it to be reset. Cars compress and deform dynamically around the items they collide with.

Automobiles now have good manufacturer and model names that are based on real-world automobiles. Apart from colour modifications, which may be done in real time by driving past a paint shop's forecourt or picking the colour during vehicle selection, cars cannot be "tuned up" or personalised. Driving through the forecourt of a petrol station to automatically replenish the car's boost metre, and driving through from the forecourt of a repair shop so that to automatically fix the vehicle, are examples of real-time modifications.
